Pool Safety for the Residential Pool

You may already be looking forward to a long Summer and many days of fun in the sun at your swimming pool.  Yep, there’s no better way to stay cool on hot, summer days. We don’t want to ruin the fun, but we want to remind you, be safe and prepared.  There are homeowner liabilities that go with pool ownership. Also, numerous safety and security responsibilities that come with a swimming pool and/or spa.  Here are a few safety tips to protect you and your guests as you swim.

Reduce Any Drowning Risks:

  • Install safety fences around the pool with a locked latch and check into water safety alarms for times when the pool is open, but you aren’t supervising it.
  • Consider covering your pool with a pool cover during non-swim seasons.   
  • Supervise invited swimmers always.
  • Keep lifesaving equipment near the pool and learn how to properly use it.
  • Do not allow swimmers to horseplay in the pool.
  • Provide inflatable floating devices and/or life jackets for young children or weak swimmers.
  • Fix missing, faulty, damaged/broken or non-complaint drain covers.

Eliminate Disease Risks:

  • Keep the pool water properly filtered and chemically treated.
  • Do not allow swimmers to drink pool water.
  • Keep pets and wild animals out of the pool.
  • Do not allow swimmers with open wounds or illnesses to go in the water.
  • Do not allow babies to swim unless they are wearing swim diapers.

Safety First:

As the homeowner, you are liable for the safety of all swimmers. Here are a few proactive measures you can take to ensure safety on your property and in your pool.

  • Consider taking lifeguarding, CPR and first aid courses so you know what to do in an emergency.
  • Maintain deck surfaces to ensure that you don’t have slippery or dangerous areas near the pool.
  • Store any pool chemicals in a cool, dry place where they are away from fire hazards and lawn care products.
