THE IMPORTANCE OF A CLEAN POOL FILTER

filter before and after

The pool filter is an important part of your pool’s overall operation. Without a pool filter, dirt and debris will not only make its way into the pool but will remain in the swimming pool. This can lead to illnesses and to the potential for algae growth in the water.

When you don’t remove the debris and bacteria from the swimming pool, the water may look cloudy and could ultimately be unfit to swim in.The skimmers and main drain at the bottom of the pool will pull debris and bacteria through return pipes to the filter.

There are 2 primary types of filters that are used on Residential pools. 1) A cartridge filter and 2) a DE or Diatomaceous Earth Filter. The main differences are the medium that filters the pool water.

The cartridge filter uses cloth-type material as the filtering agent. Water is introduced through the filter, runs through the material, and sends clean water back into the pool. The cartridges, themselves, usually need to be replaced every 3 to 4 years, depending on usage and pool environment. However, they should be cleaned quarterly as there is no way to backwash the filtering medium when the pressure gets high.

The DE filter introduces Diatomaceous Earth into the pool filter, finely ground microscopic coral, shells, and more coat the cloth grids. As water passes over the grids, the DE particles capture even the smallest suspended dirt particles. When cleaning is needed, the water flow is simply reversed or backwashed. Then more DE is added through the skimmer. It is recommended that backwashes are completed monthly or when filter pressure becomes high. They should be cleaned every 6 months. Grids will probably need to be replaced every couple of years or whenever they tear. Failing to clean them as recommended will put strain on the grids and tear.

When was the last time you had your filter cleaned? We recommend a good filter clean prior to Spring pollen and pollutants.
