Checking Chemicals

The most critical part of pool maintenance involves determining the water chemistry and balancing the chemistry as required. Critical elements of water chemistry include pH level, alkalinity, chlorine, cyanauric acid, among others. Each week, the water chemistry needs to be checked and, if necessary, be adjusted or balanced. ASP technicians have received expert training specific to water chemistry. In order to have a safe pool with an attractive appearance, water chemistry needs to be correctly balanced.

PH

Measuring the water’s pH level allows you to determine whether your pool water is acidic, “basic,” or neutral. The pH level of your pool water may be as low as 6.6 or as high as 8.4. The desired target or neutral pH level is between 7.4 and 7.6. Lower pool water pH levels are considered to be acidic, while higher pool water pH levels are considered to be “basic.”

If the pool water has a pH level lower than 7.4, the water is considered to be acidic. Acidic water or “hungry water” attempts to raise its pH level to the neutral range by pulling elements from any available pool materials, resulting in corrosion of those materials.

If the pool water has a pH level higher than 7.6, the water is considered to be “basic.” “Basic” or “over saturated water” attempts to lower its pH level to the neutral range by depositing elements from the pool water. The buildup of scale or other harmful elements results from these deposits.

Total Alkalinity

The measurement of the alkaline content of your pool water is known as total alkalinity. The total alkalinity of your pool water changes as the pH level changes. Constant, rapid fluctuations in the pool water’s pH level are an indicator of low alkaline levels. Cloudy, or otherwise undesirable water clarity, is a sign of high alkaline levels.

Calcium Hardness

The amount of calcium present in the pool water is determined by the calcium hardness measurement. When the pool’s calcium hardness is low, the water seeks to raise its calcium content from any available calcium source, including pool materials. Pool tiles and the pool plaster finish can be damaged when the pool water has a high calcium hardness content. Additionally the water in pools with a high calcium hardness has poor water clarity. Balancing the calcium hardness will protect pool tiles, the pool plaster finish, and will improve water clarity.

Cleaning the Pool

A certified ASP employee will clean your pool on a weekly basis. As part of the cleaning, the ASP technician will remove debris and other unwanted materials from the pool. When required, a Leaf-Master will be used during the cleaning process. The surface area around the pool will be swept and surface debris about the pool will be removed. Surface tiles will be scrubbed to inhibit grime and algae buildup.

Proper Filtration & Water Flow

Similar to the heart in the human body, the pool pump filtration system pumps filtered water and chemicals throughout the swimming pool and throughout all the pool piping. When the pool pump filtration system is functioning properly, appearance of the water in the pool is greatly enhanced. Your ASP technician will fully inspect the pool pump filtration system to insure it is functioning at the maximum level of efficiency. The presence of algae and calcium buildup, as well as pool and equipment corrosion, is a symptom of a poorly functioning pool pump filtration system.

Consider a Salt Water System

A salt water chlorination system may provide an attractive alternative to a more traditional chlorination system. Although salt water chlorination systems are not as common as traditional chlorination systems, they provide the advantage of being “self-chlorinating.” The process involved in a salt water chlorination system causes salt to be converted automatically to chlorine and the chlorine to be converted automatically back to salt. This process repeats itself continuously and results in more stable levels of chlorine presence in the pool water. Since the conversion process from salt to chlorine and back to salt is automatic, less maintenance of the chlorination system is required. An additional benefit of a salt water chlorination system is less damage and irritation to skin, eyes, and hair.
