Compare Pool Cover Options

Pool covers and safety nets differ in how they operate, how long they take to handle, and the functions they serve. Your selection may depend on the desired safety function, convenience, and need to control evaporation or debris. During your consultation, we can discuss the configurations available for your pool.

Lightweight Net Options

Pool safety nets are tightly stretched across a pool in a web pattern with openings of three to four inches. ASP describes these nets as lightweight, removable, and installable in about five minutes. Because the open-web design differs from a solid cover, consider the function you want this option to serve.

Traditional Pool Covers

Pool covers are tightly stretched across the pool. ASP states that most can support more than 4,000 pounds, although you should confirm the specifications of an individual product before making a selection. A traditional cover generally takes about 15 to 20 minutes to install or remove, depending on the pool’s size and shape.

Automatic Pool Covers

Automatic pool covers cover or uncover the pool with the push of a button. They offer greater operating convenience than a manually handled cover, but they cost more than traditional pool covers. The appropriate configuration depends on the pool and the homeowner’s priorities.

Arizona Pool-Barrier Requirements

Arizona’s pool-barrier law, A.R.S. § 36-1681, applies to swimming pools and other contained bodies of water that are at least 18 inches deep and more than 8 feet wide at any point. A required pool barrier must be at least five feet high, stand at least 20 inches from the water’s edge, and have no opening that permits a 4-inch-diameter sphere to pass through.

When a residence forms part of the required enclosure, the law allows a motorized safety pool cover as an alternative to a separate 4-foot interior barrier under specific conditions. The cover must be operated by a key switch and meet ASTM F1346, a safety-performance standard for pool covers. Review the product specifications and complete enclosure for compliance rather than assuming any motorized cover satisfies the law.

A violation of the pool-enclosure requirement is a petty offense. Arizona law provides that no fine is imposed when the owner installs a compliant barrier within 45 days after the citation and completes an approved swimming pool safety course. These legal requirements are separate from our service claims and should be considered when selecting a cover.

How Pool Covers Simplify Everyday Care

A cover reduces the water surface exposed to direct sun and dry air, limiting evaporation when the pool isn’t in use. It can also reduce heat loss from the water between swims.

Covering the water keeps leaves, dust, and other debris from entering the pool. Reduced evaporation and debris may lower the water, chemical, and cleaning demands associated with leaving a pool uncovered. Actual needs depend on pool use, weather, and the selected cover.
