What is pH in pool water? And why is it so important to maintain proper pH levels?

Pool
The pH is a measure of the acidity of the water. The pH scale goes from 0 to 14, which 7 is neutral. If the pH is above 7 the water is acidic; if its below 7 the water is alkaline. 7.4 is the optimum pH for pool water since this is the same pH as our mucous membranes and our eyes.

It is important to note that a high pH (alkaline) causes: Poorer chlorine disinfection, skin irritation, scale buildup, and cloudiness of the water. A low pH (acidic) causes etching of pool surfaces, irritation of the eyes and mucous membranes, and damage to pool equipment.

Many issues with pool water quality are falsely attributed to high or low chlorine levels when often times the issue lies in the pH imbalance. This makes pH a highly important aspect of pool water maintenance. This is one of the many reasons pool owners may want to seek the help of a professional pool maintenance company to manage their water chemical balancing and overall cleaning.
