How to Get Your Panama City Pool Spring Break & Summer Ready

ASPPanamaCity

In Panama City, we are lucky enough to enjoy mild winters that allow us to keep our pools open year-round. But just because your pool didn't have a cover over it all winter doesn't mean it is automatically ready for peak season.

As the weather warms up and Spring Break approaches, your pool is about to face heavy bather loads, extra sunscreen, and the intense Florida sun. Spring is the perfect time to shift from “winter maintenance mode” into “peak season readiness.”

Here is your essential spring tune-up checklist to ensure your pool stays crystal clear all summer long.

1. The Spring Water Chemistry Reset

The Florida sun is notoriously harsh on pool chemicals, especially chlorine. As water temperatures rise, bacteria and algae grow faster, meaning your pool will demand more sanitation.

Now is the time to double-check your Cyanuric Acid (CYA), also known as a stabilizer. CYA acts as "sunscreen" for your chlorine, preventing the sun's UV rays from burning it off too quickly. Keep your water balanced within these ideal ranges for the spring:

  • Chlorine: 2–5 ppm
  • pH: 7.4–7.6
  • Alkalinity: 80–120 ppm
  • Stabilizer (CYA): 30–50 ppm (often 50–70 ppm for salt pools)

2. Deep Clean Your Filter & Salt Cell

Because Panama City pools run 365 days a year, your filter has been working non-stop through fall leaves and winter breezes. A clean filter is the secret to clear water and a long-lasting pump.

  • Filters: Depending on your system, sand filters need to be properly backwashed, DE filters should be backwashed and recharged, and cartridge filters need a thorough deep clean.
  • Salt Cells: If you have a salt pool, calcium buildup naturally occurs inside the salt cell over the winter. Spring is the exact right time to inspect and clean the cell so it can generate enough chlorine for the busy months ahead.

3. Inspect Your Equipment Now

Don’t wait until Memorial Day weekend to find out your pump is failing! A proactive spring inspection can save you from a mid-summer pool closure. Take a walk around your equipment pad and check for:

  • Small puddles or leaks around the pump
  • Worn-out O-rings and pump seals
  • Stiff or difficult-to-turn valves
  • Wear and tear on your automatic pool cleaner

Catching a small leak now is a quick fix; waiting until July can turn it into an expensive emergency.

4. Proactively Shock for Spring Break

More people swimming means more sweat, sunscreen, and natural oils entering the water. Before you host your first big Spring Break or weekend pool party, give your pool a proactive shock treatment. This eliminates chloramines (the compounds that cause that strong "pool smell" and irritate your eyes) and gives your water a fresh, sanitary slate.
