Checking Chemicals

Checking and balancing the chemicals used in your swimming pool is the most important part of pool maintenance. It is also critical to determine the pH and alkalinity levels, along with the levels of chlorine, cyanauric acid among others. All ASP pool technicians are trained to evaluate and adjust these chemicals, as required, on a weekly basis. The proper balancing of pool chemicals will enhance the appearance and the use and comfort of your swimming pool.

PH

The pH level is a measurement of how acidic or “basic” the water in your swimming pool is. The pH range of your pool water can be between 6.6 and 8.4 with a target between 7.4 and 7.6 being optimum. Swimming pool water with a pH level lower in the range is considered to be more acidic and pool water with a pH level higher in the range is considered to be more “basic.”

Swimming pool water with a pH level less than 7.4 is considered to be acidic or “hungry.” The pool water will attempt to attain a neutral pH level by seeking elements through corrosion of pool materials to mix with itself resulting in potential serious pool damage.

Swimming pool water with a pH level greater than 7.6 is considered to be “basic” or “over saturated.” The pool water will attempt to attain a neutral pH level by seeking to deposit elements from the water which causes an increase in scale and other harmful mineral build up.

Total Alkalinity

The measurement of alkaline materials in your swimming pool water is known as total alkalinity which is affected by the pH level of the water. Alkaline materials present in the pool water serve as a buffer between corrosion of your pool and acidic water. Constant and rapid fluctuations in the pH level are caused by low alkaline levels. Cloudy water or decreased water clarity are the result of high alkaline levels. If a balanced level of total alkalinity is achieved, both cloudy water and constant rapid changes to pH levels can be avoided.

Calcium Hardness

The amount of calcium that is present in your swimming pool water is determined by the calcium hardness measurement. Low calcium hardness results in the pool water attempting to leach calcium from any available pool materials which can damage the pool tiles and plaster finish. Cloudy water is a result of high calcium hardness. Calcium hardness needs to be balanced in order to help prevent cloudy water and to prevent damage to the pool tiles and plaster finish.

Cleaning the Pool

ASP staff will clean your pool each week. Cleaning your swimming pool includes the removal of debris or other materials that would not normally be present in your pool. A Leaf-Master may be used to assist in the removal of larger debris from your swimming pool. Your ASP technician will sweep the area about the pool and remove all surface debris. The surface tiles will be scrubbed to prevent the build-up of grime and algae.

Proper Filtration & Water Flow

The most critical aspect of your swimming pool’s operation is the flow of water throughout the pool. Similarly to the heart in the human body, the “heart” of the swimming pool is the pool pump filter. All required chemicals are filtered and pumped throughout the swimming pool water system, including all pool pipes, by the filtration system. Each week the filtration is checked by your ASP technician to determine that it is efficiently operating. The presence of algae, corrosion, and calcium build-up are indicators that your swimming pool is in “poor health” as a result of inadequate water flow.

Consider a Salt Water System

Traditional chlorination systems generally require more maintenance that swimming pools using salt water chlorination systems. Salt water chlorination systems are less common than traditional chlorination systems; however they essentially take care of the chlorination process for you. Salt is converted to chlorine for use in the pool and then is converted back to salt in a continuous cycle thereby achieving a more stable chlorine level. Less time is required to balance chemicals and pool water chlorinated by salt water systems cause less damage and irritation to skin, eyes, and hair.
