Pool Filter Cleaning in Charleston

Professional Filter Service for Residential & Commercial Pools

Your pool’s filter is the heart of its circulation system. As the pump moves water through, the filter pulls out bugs, debris, dirt, and contaminants before that water returns clean to your pool. When the filter gets overloaded, water quality drops, and the equipment works harder. We provide pool filter cleaning for residential and commercial pools throughout the Charleston area, helping filtration systems run the way they should.

The Lowcountry’s year-round swim season means your filter never really gets a break. Add in persistent humidity, summer storms, and heavy pool use, and the debris load on a Charleston pool filter is significant. Consistent filter maintenance isn’t optional here, the way it might be in markets where pools sit idle for months.

Signs Your Filter Needs Service

The most reliable indicator is your pressure gauge. A reading 8–10 PSI higher than the filter’s clean starting pressure means it’s time for service. Don’t have a baseline number? Our technicians establish one during every visit, so you always have a reference point.

Other signs worth watching for:

  • Reduced flow at outlets: water returning to the pool with noticeably less force than usual
  • Weak suction at inlets: debris sitting on the pool floor instead of getting pulled in
  • Water features running slowly: aerators or laminars that seem sluggish
  • An automatic cleaner that’s stopped working: many depend on proper filtration to function

A clogged filter forces the pump to work harder to push water through. That strain adds up, and catching the problem early can cost far less than replacing equipment down the road.

DE Filters, Cartridge Filters & Sand Filters

Our technicians are trained to service all three filter types. Each one works differently, and each requires a different cleaning approach.

Diatomaceous Earth (DE) Filters

DE filters use internal grids coated with diatomaceous earth (a fine, powdery sedimentary rock) to capture impurities. Cleaning involves breaking down and flushing the spent diatomaceous earth from the grids. Afterward, the correct amount of fresh DE must be recharged into the filter to support filtration performance.

Cartridge Filters

Cartridge filters use removable, cylindrical elements made from pleated polyester to trap debris and contaminants. Most cartridges are reusable and can be cleaned and reinstalled, though some reach the end of their useful life and need replacement. We inspect the cartridge during every cleaning and let you know where things stand. Cartridge filters should be cleaned at least every 3 months during peak season, and Charleston’s heavy summer use can shorten that window.

Sand Filters

Sand filters rely on a bed of sand as the filtration medium. Maintenance involves backwashing, a process that reverses water flow to flush trapped debris out of the sand bed. Sand filters should be backwashed every 4–6 weeks while the circulation system is running. Over time, the sand itself breaks down and needs replacement, which we handle as part of our filter service.

If a cleaning uncovers damage or wear, we can clean, repair, or replace your pool filter in the same service call. There’s no second appointment and no second company.

What Sets Us Apart

Every technician on our team completes training and a background check before setting foot on your property. We arrive on the same day each week, close every gate behind us, and leave the area clean when we go. That consistency matters when you’re trusting someone with your home or facility.

After each visit, you’ll receive a digital service report that includes the time of the visit, work performed, chemicals added, and a photo of your pool. You’ll know exactly what was done, even if you weren’t home.

ASP - America's Swimming Pool Company of Charleston and Summerville is locally owned and operated, so we know the Lowcountry’s pools. A well-maintained filtration system can provide 10–20 years of service, and regular professional cleaning is one of the most effective ways to help protect that investment.
