Lake County & Florida Pool Safety Requirements

New installations and some remodeling projects are subject to Lake County permitting and Florida pool-safety requirements. The rules that apply depend on the property’s jurisdiction and the project scope, so homeowners should confirm current requirements before work begins.

Requirements relevant to residential pool projects include:

• Permitting: New residential pools in Minneola require permitting through the City of Minneola Building Department, while properties in unincorporated Lake County go through the County’s Office of Building Services.
• Completion Review: Before issuing a certificate of completion, the county reviews pool-barrier plans, entrapment prevention systems, and electrical bonding, which is the required connection of conductive metal components.
• Barrier Height & Gates: County rules require pool barriers to be at least 48 inches high. Gates must be self-closing, self-latching, and designed to swing away from the pool.
• Approved Safety Features: Florida law requires every new residential pool to have at least one approved safety feature before final inspection. Options include a qualifying barrier, safety cover, exit alarm, or qualifying self-closing and self-latching door.
• Barrier Openings: State requirements set a minimum barrier height of 4 feet. The barrier can’t include openings or features that allow a young child to crawl under, squeeze through, or climb over it.
